Transparent multi-touch display hoped to be in smartphones this year.

Taiwan based Polytron Technologies created the transparent display, using their “Switchable Glass” technology which allows the display to be used on both sides. A conductive OLED uses liquid crystal molecules to display images, which then turns a cloudy white color when switched off.

The company is currently marketing the display to OEMs, and told The Verge they are currently working on making a less conspicuous lithium-ion battery. They also say that once the phone is in production, a darker glass cover would help to conceal the SD and SIM cards.

There’s also no clear indication that it will actually come to production anytime soon, but Yu seems confident about its chances. “It will happen near the end of 2013,” Yu told Macworld last week. “Trust me.” He later told us that Polytron is already in serious discussions with “major smartphone makers” across the US, Europe, Japan, and South Korea.

The company plans to announce a prototype transparent tablet within the “next couple of weeks”.
